ELKTON, MD — The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has honored Cecil County with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The accolade acknowledges the county’s comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2022.
An impartial panel evaluated the report, concluding that it met the stringent standards set by the GFOA program. The report was praised for its “spirit of full disclosure,” effectively communicating the county’s financial standing and encouraging potential users and user groups to read it.
The Certificate of Achievement is regarded as the pinnacle of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. Attaining this award signifies a notable accomplishment by a government and its management team. The GFOA, which promotes excellence in government finance, introduced the Certificate of Achievement in 1945.
County Executive Danielle Hornberger expressed her satisfaction with the recognition, stating, “We are extremely pleased to have been recognized with this award, which is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility. This is just another indicator that Cecil is moving in the right direction.”
The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement to motivate and assist state and local governments to surpass the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles. This year marks the 33rd consecutive year that Cecil County has received this esteemed award.
