NORTH EAST, MD — Cecil College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Class of 2024 has set a new benchmark for excellence by achieving a 100% pass rate on the National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE) on their first attempt. This accomplishment underscores the program’s strength and the rigorous training provided by Cecil College, which is recognized as one of Maryland’s premier PTA schools.

“This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as the NPTE underwent significant updates in 2024, introducing a more challenging format and content,” said Deanna Smith, PT, MPT, Program Director of Cecil College’s PTA Program. “This success underscores the strength of Cecil College’s robust curriculum and the dedication of its expert faculty, who are committed to cultivating top-tier clinicians.”

The NPTE is a critical assessment that measures the competence of graduates from accredited programs. Successfully passing this exam is a requirement for licensure and entry into the profession. Cecil College’s PTA program recently celebrated this achievement with a White Coat Pinning Ceremony on May 16, honoring the six students who have undergone rigorous coursework and clinical training.

Cecil College launched its PTA program in January 2015 and received a five-year initial accreditation. Due to stellar outcomes, the program was awarded full ten-year accreditation in October 2021. Its national prominence grew as the first five cohorts of graduates achieved a 100% first-attempt pass rate on the NPTE, consistently surpassing national averages in all exam categories.

Members of the Class of 2024 who took the NPTE include:

  • James Brindley from North East, MD
  • Julia Coyne from Earleville, MD
  • Jenna D’Amico from Lincoln University, PA
  • Marissa Grigora from Abingdon, MD
  • Richard Kind from Townsend, DE
  • Skylar Sheppard from Elkton, MD

The success of Cecil College’s PTA program is particularly significant given the growing demand for PTAs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for PTAs is projected to grow 32% through 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. In Maryland, the annual mean wage for PTAs is $68,870, reflecting the high value and need for these healthcare professionals.

Cecil College’s PTA program continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in education and its role in shaping the future of physical therapy. The dedication of its faculty and the high caliber of its students ensure that the program remains a leader in the field, preparing graduates to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.
