NORTH EAST, MD — Cecil College will celebrate Earth Day with a free community shred event on Tuesday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until capacity) at its main campus, located at One Seahawk Drive, North East, Md. Open to residents and businesses, the event aims to promote secure document disposal and environmental responsibility.

A mobile shredding unit will be on-site, allowing participants to observe their documents being shredded through an observation window. The service is designed for the secure destruction of items such as charge receipts, old utility bills, and bank statements. Materials with staples or paperclips are also accepted. Additionally, a large container will be available for disposing of electronic items such as videotapes, CDs, thumb drives, and X-rays. These items will be transported to a disposal facility, and the college will receive a certificate verifying their destruction.

The event is part of a broader Earth Day Celebration featuring food, ice cream, and local vendors. Finnegan’s Famous food truck will be on-site, alongside free ice cream from Woodside Farm Creamery. Additional activities include vendors from Rumbleway Farm, Bohemia Bees, Plumpton Park Zoo, and Hannibal Farm.

“Properly disposing of personal documents is one way for people to protect themselves from identity theft,” notes the Federal Trade Commission, which recommends shredding sensitive materials like unused checks, credit applications, and expired charge cards.

Cecil College’s event offers a unique opportunity for individuals and businesses to safeguard their personal information while contributing to an environmentally friendly cause. By combining secure document management with Earth Day festivities, the college underscores its commitment to both the community and the planet. Don’t miss this chance to celebrate Earth Day responsibly.
