NORTH EAST, MD — Four exceptional students from Cecil College were celebrated for their academic and leadership accomplishments at the 30th Annual All-Maryland Community College Recognition Dinner, a prestigious event held at Turf Valley Resort and Convention Center on Wednesday, May 1. These students were chosen for the Phi Theta Kappa All-Maryland Academic Team, a recognition that highlights their outstanding performance both in academia and in community engagement within the State of Maryland.
Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt expressed immense pride in the achievements of the honored students, Jaylah Tyjani-Thai Williams, Angela Teague, Patricia Johnson, and Rebecca Scarborough. “It was such an honor to present our students with their medallions. They are true examples of the excellence community college students perform both in the classroom and in the community,” said Dr. Bolt, highlighting the dual emphasis on academic prowess and community service that defines the awards.
Since its inception in 1995, the Maryland All-State Academic Team Recognition Awards Program has served to spotlight the commendable achievements of Maryland’s community college students, offering them a pathway to further accolades such as a nomination for the All-USA Community College Academic Team. This year’s honorees from Cecil College epitomize the qualities the program aims to celebrate.
Jaylah Tyjani-Thai Williams, aspiring to meld her interests in Social Work and Cybersecurity, was distinguished as a member of the First Academic Team. With ambitions to become a clinical social worker focused on aiding teenagers and young adults, Williams credited the opportunities provided by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) for enabling her to take leadership roles and engage in community service. “I was able to help set up an event for our members, along with contacting different charities to set up donations for them,” Williams shared, reflecting on her proactive engagement in PTK activities.
Angela Teague, also awarded First Academic Team honors, is pursuing her Associate of Fine Arts degree with aspirations of creating art that fosters community bonds while supporting her family. Teague appreciated the platform PTK offered for leadership development and community involvement, stating, “PTK has allowed me to explore my leadership through kindness and involvement.”
Rebecca Scarborough, named to the Second Academic Team, is completing her associate degree in computer programming and looks forward to a career in the IT industry. She acknowledges PTK for boosting her confidence and providing support that will benefit her professionally.
Patricia Johnson, selected for the Second Academic Team for her studies in the paramedic program, plans to continue her volunteer work within the community upon earning her paramedic license, showcasing the civic-minded spirit celebrated by PTK.
The recognition bestowed upon these students by Phi Theta Kappa—the largest honor society in American higher education—highlights the importance of nurturing academic achievement and leadership among two-year college students. It represents not just personal accolades for the students but also illustrates the vital role community colleges like Cecil College play in fostering talent that will contribute significantly to society and the workforce.
