DOVER, DE — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has announced the opening dates for the 2025 downstate pond trout season, offering an exciting opportunity for anglers of all ages. The season will begin with a youth-only day on Saturday, March 1, for anglers under the age of 16. The following day, Sunday, March 2, the regular season will open to all anglers starting a half-hour before sunrise.
To enhance the fishing experience, Tidbury Pond in Kent County and Newton Pond in Sussex County will each be stocked with over 300 pounds of 12- to 13-inch rainbow trout ahead of opening day. Trophy-sized trout weighing two or more pounds will also be included to increase the allure for fishing enthusiasts. A second stocking is planned for mid-March. Both ponds will remain closed to all fishing through Friday, Feb. 28, allowing trout to acclimate and reducing incidental catches before the season officially begins.
“Proceeds from the sales of Delaware trout stamps play a vital role in supporting these stocking efforts,” according to DNREC. The trout stamp program funds the purchase of trout, while additional support comes from federal Sport Fish Restoration funds, which are generated through anglers’ fishing gear purchases.
Anglers planning to fish during the season should be aware of the following rules and regulations:
- A Delaware fishing license is required unless exempt.
- A Delaware trout stamp, valid through April 1, is mandatory unless exempt.
- The daily possession limit is set at six trout.
The upstate trout season, which includes a similar youth-only day, will open on Saturday, April 5, followed by the regular season for all anglers on Sunday, April 6.
This annual tradition plays a crucial role not just in fostering a sense of community among anglers, but also in supporting conservation efforts in Delaware. The 2025 trout season is expected to draw significant interest, underscoring the program’s success in combining recreational fishing opportunities with sustainable fisheries management.
