BRYN MAWR, PA — Bryn Mawr College celebrated the inauguration of its 10th president, Wendy Cadge, on Saturday, October 26. The event brought together students, alumnae/i, trustees, faculty, and staff, alongside delegates from academic institutions nationwide, to honor Cadge’s leadership and vision.
Wendy Cadge, an expert in American spirituality and religion, began her term on July 1, 2024, after serving as dean at Brandeis University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. A prolific author, she has published over 100 articles and four books covering topics from spiritual care to Buddhism in the United States. Her return to Bryn Mawr marks a homecoming to Delaware County, where she attended Springfield High School before earning her degree from Swarthmore College and advanced degrees from Princeton University.
In her inaugural address, Cadge emphasized the transformative role of a liberal arts education. “Bryn Mawr College is very clear about what is central for us; the light,” she remarked, referencing the college’s symbolic lantern. She highlighted the college’s commitment to illuminating the world through generations of women dedicated to learning.
Cadge also announced a significant initiative to enhance Bryn Mawr’s sustainability efforts over the next five years. She declared plans to increase resources for sustainability projects and to create a dedicated position in 2025 to focus on these efforts at the college and in local communities.
Cynthia Archer, chair of the Board of Trustees and a Bryn Mawr alumna, praised Cadge’s appointment, stating, “As a community, we have searched for and found a leader who understands and deeply believes in the global importance of the liberal arts.” Archer noted Cadge’s commitment to uplifting women, fostering equity, and ensuring sustainability for future generations.
The ceremony featured speakers from various academic institutions, including Barbara Savage from the University of Pennsylvania, who lauded Cadge’s scholarly achievements and dedication to linking intellectual inquiry with contemporary issues. Other notable attendees included Haverford College President Wendy Raymond and Swarthmore College President Valerie Smith.
Following the inauguration, the college hosted a community block party as part of its “Owls Fest” weekend, offering a range of activities for alumnae/i, families, and friends to celebrate the new chapter in Bryn Mawr’s storied history.
