CAERNARVON TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the immediate closure of a bridge on California Road (Route 1019) in Lancaster County, following the discovery of damage during a routine inspection. The bridge, which crosses an unnamed tributary to the Conestoga River, showed signs of scouring beneath its abutments, prompting swift action to safeguard the public.
In response to the closure, PennDOT has established a detour to guide motorists around the affected area. Southbound travelers are advised to follow Route 10 south to Route 23 west, while those heading north should take Route 23 east to Route 10 north, continuing to Chestnut Hill Road/California Road. This detour aims to maintain smooth traffic flow until the bridge replacement project commences.
Originally constructed in 1934, the bridge accommodates an average of 547 vehicles daily. A replacement project is set to begin in the spring of next year, with the contract anticipated to be awarded in January 2025. The construction is expected to span approximately one year.
