WILMINGTON, DE — The Brandywine Hundred Library (BHL), a beloved community hub, will temporarily shut its doors from Thursday, Feb. 1 to Monday, May 6. The closure is due to a series of essential upgrades that New Castle County will be implementing, including the replacement of the building’s heating and cooling system (HVAC) and roof.
The current HVAC system, which has been in use for over two decades, is no longer able to provide adequate heating and cooling. The forthcoming system promises not only more energy efficiency but also improved airflow throughout the library. Additionally, ductwork will undergo a thorough cleaning and removal process where necessary, ensuring healthier air quality for patrons and staff alike. Concurrently, the project will tackle roof replacement, addressing areas damaged by persistent leaks, which will be repaired and repainted.
Given the lack of temperature and air-filtration controls during the installation of the HVAC system, the temporary closure of BHL is deemed necessary to ensure the safety of both patrons and staff.
Diana Brown, Manager of Libraries, acknowledges the inconvenience but emphasizes the long-term benefits. “The Brandywine Hundred Library is a cornerstone of the community,” she said. “While a temporary closure is necessary for these essential upgrades, we are making every effort to minimize disruption for our patrons. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we work towards creating an even better library experience for everyone.”
During this period, library users are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours at the nearby Claymont and Woodlawn Libraries. Both libraries will be open seven days a week, with varying hours of operation.
For those with existing holds at BHL, holds will be automatically redirected to either Claymont or Woodlawn. Patrons can also opt to use their online account or contact a local library to arrange pickup at another public library. With BHL’s book drop set to close, checked-out materials can be returned to any public library in the state.
Despite the temporary closure, BHL staff will continue to order new materials. These will be available at other libraries until BHL reopens. Wi-Fi will remain accessible in the library’s parking lot for patrons requiring internet access.
As the Brandywine Hundred Library embarks on this period of closure and renovation, the focus is on enhancing the patron experience. The upcoming improvements are a testament to the library’s commitment to providing a comfortable, energy-efficient, and health-conscious environment for its community.
