Boomi and California State University Revolutionize Student Aid with Cutting-Edge Technology

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — In a groundbreaking advancement for educational funding, Boomi, in partnership with the California State University (CSU) system and the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), has dramatically accelerated the process for students to access vital financial aid. This collaboration harnesses Boomi’s advanced API capabilities and cloud services provided by Unisys to streamline the distribution of Cal Grants to students, marking a significant leap forward in the modernization of financial aid processes.

The initiative comes as a boon to approximately 142,500 CSU students who benefit annually from Cal Grants, a critical source of funding that covers a range of educational expenses from tuition and books to housing. Traditionally, the allocation of these grants involved a cumbersome, manual process fraught with delays, often leaving students in limbo as they awaited confirmation of their financial aid packages just before the semester began.

Nathan Evans, Ph.D., CSU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, hailed the new system as a “huge win” for both students and administrative efficiency. “This cloud-based system…sets the stage for additional innovative, sustainable, and efficient improvements down the road,” he stated, emphasizing the transformative impact on the university’s overall financial aid operation.

The technological overhaul facilitated by Boomi and Unisys has reduced the time from application to money distribution from nearly a month to under seven days. Ed Clark, Ph.D., Chief Information Officer at the CSU, underscored the significance of this acceleration, noting, “For many students, this is the difference between enrolling and dropping out.” This rapid turnaround is especially crucial for those whose attendance hinges on the timely receipt of financial support.

The collaboration represents a departure from the previous, labor-intensive approach that required multiple uploads, downloads, and adjustments to ensure accurate grant distribution. Instead, the Boomi platform, supported by Unisys cloud services, enables a seamless, near-real-time process for identifying, requesting, packaging, and processing student aid.

Ken Ketsdever, Chief Information Officer at CSAC, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s potential to expedite funding availability, thereby removing a significant barrier to higher education for many students. Josh Rutberg, Chief Customer Officer at Boomi, further highlighted the initiative’s impact: “Our technology streamlines the once labor-intensive process…transforming it into a near-real-time operation.”

Currently, nine of the CSU’s 23 campuses have implemented the new Boomi API-based solution, with plans to bring the remaining 14 campuses online by spring 2024. This initiative not only exemplifies how technological innovation can solve complex bureaucratic challenges but also serves as a model for other institutions seeking to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of student aid distribution. As this project unfolds, it promises to open doors for countless students, enabling them to pursue their educational aspirations with greater financial security and peace of mind.
