PHILADELPHIA, PA — Blue Bird Corporation has successfully delivered a fleet of 38 propane-powered buses to the School District of Philadelphia (SDP). This initiative marks a significant step in the district’s efforts to transition to cleaner transportation solutions.
The newly delivered Type C Vision buses can transport up to 42 students each and offer a range of up to 300 miles on a single tank of propane. These buses significantly reduce harmful emissions, producing 96% fewer pollutants than traditional diesel-powered buses, thereby promoting better health for students, drivers, and the broader community.
In addition to environmental benefits, the propane-powered buses offer economic advantages. By switching from diesel to propane, the district stands to save up to $3,700 per bus annually in fuel and maintenance costs, potentially totaling over $2.1 million in savings over the vehicles’ 15-year lifespan.
Superintendent Tony B. Watlington, Sr., expressed enthusiasm about the district’s progress toward sustainable transportation, stating, “We are excited to be leading the way here in Philadelphia as we grow our low-emission school bus fleet and create a healthier environment for our students, drivers, and the community-at-large.”
Albert Burleigh, Vice President of North America Bus Sales at Blue Bird Corporation, highlighted the significance of the delivery, noting, “We are thrilled to supply the School District of Philadelphia, one of the largest in the nation, with our industry-leading, ultra-low-emission propane school buses.”
Since 2012, Blue Bird has partnered with ROUSH CleanTech to develop alternative-fuel vehicles, leading to the deployment of over 20,000 propane-powered buses nationwide. Todd Mouw, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Success at ROUSH CleanTech, commended the district’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Congratulations to the School District of Philadelphia for its commitment to reducing emissions with cost-cutting propane school buses.”
This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to transitioning to cleaner technologies and enhancing the sustainability of student transportation in Philadelphia.
