WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Bill Griese, deputy executive director for the Tile Council of North America, has officially begun his term as the 2024 chair of the ASTM International board of directors. The board is comprised of 25 leaders from a diverse range of organizations worldwide, including companies, associations, universities, and government bodies.

Griese has been associated with ASTM International since 2007 and has served in various roles, facilitating standards development, product testing, and research. He has also represented North American ceramic tile and allied product manufacturers in regulatory, legislative, trade, and environmental matters.

Reflecting on his tenure with ASTM, Griese noted the organization’s consistent approach to consensus building and stakeholder engagement. “Even though a lot has changed in these 15 years since I joined ASTM, so much has remained the same,” he said. “As we evolve the ways we communicate, collaborate, and develop standards, maintaining the integrity of the standards-development process will be critical.”

During his association with ASTM International, Griese has chaired the committee on ceramic whitewares and related products (C21) for three consecutive terms. He has also led the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations. Currently, he chairs the ceramic tile subcommittee (C21.06) and is a member of the committees on sustainability (E60) and manufactured masonry units (C15).

Griese’s contributions to ASTM have been recognized with the James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award in 2013 and the Award of Merit from C21 in 2018.

Beyond ASTM, Griese is an active participant in other standards groups such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). He is also a U.S. delegate to the World Ceramic Tiles Forum. A LEED-accredited professional, Griese regularly conducts seminars and contributes articles to industry publications.
