Berks County Secures Over $2.8 Million in Grant Funding for Crucial Transportation and Community Projects

READING, PA — In a major boost for Berks County’s infrastructure and community development, Senator Judy Schwank (D-Berks) has announced the awarding of $2,806,766 in grant funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority. This significant financial injection is set to enhance transportation options, pedestrian safety, and local facilities across the 11th Senatorial District, marking a pivotal step towards creating more vibrant and interconnected communities.

The grants, drawn from the Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) and the Local Share Account-Category 4 Facilities Program (LSA-Category 4), aim to support a wide range of projects. From intersection construction and road reconstruction to sidewalk installations and the purchase of essential municipal equipment, these funds will address critical infrastructure needs throughout Berks County.

The MTF grants, totaling $2,181,221, are part of a statewide initiative designed to improve public transportation assets, thereby enhancing community well-being and stimulating economic development. Among the notable projects receiving MTF funding are:

  • CG Broadcast, LLC’s construction of two intersections in Spring Township, facilitating the development of a planned mixed-use community, with a grant of $667,249.
  • Mount Penn Borough’s road reconstruction along Endlich Avenue, improving accessibility and safety, awarded $653,716.
  • Maxatawny Township’s installation of sidewalks and related improvements along Kutztown Road, receiving $457,935, aimed at enhancing pedestrian pathways.
  • West Reading Borough’s efforts to bolster pedestrian safety and accessibility along Ann Street with $253,851, focusing on curbing, sidewalks, and handicap ramp access.
  • ReFined Plastics, LLC’s bridge repair over railroad tracks in Cumru Township, crucial for maintaining infrastructure integrity, granted $148,470.

Additionally, the LSA-Category 4 Program, which supports projects in counties with Category 4 licensed gaming facilities, approved $625,545 for diverse community initiatives. These include the acquisition of new equipment for St. Lawrence Borough, improvements to pedestrian safety in Sinking Spring Borough, and the purchase of a new ladder truck for the Wyomissing Fire Department.
