MOHNTON, PA — Berks County Search and Rescue (BCSAR) has taken a significant stride in inclusive emergency services by becoming a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC). The certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), marks an important step forward in providing tailored support to autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals during emergencies.

The certification process involved specialized training in autism awareness, communication strategies, and understanding sensory sensitivities. This initiative positions BCSAR as a torchbearer among search and rescue teams nationwide, setting a precedent for other organizations to follow suit.

This move comes at a crucial time. Recent CDC data highlights that 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, and 1 in 6 individuals have sensory needs. With adults also being diagnosed later in life, the need for first responders to understand and adequately assist these individuals is more pressing than ever.

Critics might argue that such specialized training could divert resources from other essential areas. However, proponents counter that the benefits far outweigh any potential drawbacks. They point out that enhancing communication strategies and creating a supportive environment during high-stress situations can significantly improve the effectiveness of emergency responses.

Moreover, this training equips first responders with the skills to recognize and respect the individual needs and preferences of those with autism, leading to more personalized and effective assistance.

In addition to the training, BCSAR has equipped its command unit with autism communication cards, backpacks, weighted blankets and other items to comfort people with autism during emergencies.

As part of its commitment to autism awareness, IBCCES has also launched CertifiedAutismCenter.com, a free online resource listing certified locations and professionals.

By achieving this certification, BCSAR hopes to create a ripple effect, encouraging a broader adoption of inclusive practices within the search and rescue community. The team’s dedication to inclusivity could prove to be a game-changer in the lives of individuals with autism and their families, marking a step towards a more compassionate and supportive community for all.
