SCRANTON, PA — Richard Rader, 61, a resident of New Galilee in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for attempted online enticement of a minor. The sentencing was announced on Friday by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, with United States District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion presiding over the case.

Between June 20, 2022, and July 8, 2022, Rader used the internet and an electronic device to try and convince a person he thought was a 12-year-old child to engage in sexual conduct and produce child pornography images. During this period, Rader sent obscene photographs of himself to the supposed child on two separate occasions.

The case was meticulously investigated by Homeland Security Investigations – Philadelphia Division. Assistant United States Attorneys Michelle Olshefski and Tatum Wilson were responsible for prosecuting the case.

The maximum punishment under federal law for such an offense is life imprisonment, a term of supervised release after imprisonment, and a fine. However, the final sentence following a guilty verdict is determined by the Judge after considering the relevant federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. In this instance, Judge Mannion deemed a 120-month imprisonment appropriate for Rader’s actions.
