COLUMBIA, PA — Columbia Borough Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man who allegedly evaded law enforcement in a high-speed chase. The suspect remains at large and authorities are seeking public assistance in locating him.
On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at around 12:25 pm, Columbia Police Patrol Officer Brent Smith noticed a black Chrysler 200 sedan with a Texas license plate being driven recklessly near the intersection of S. Third Street and Cherry Streets. Officer Smith attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating his emergency lights and siren, but the driver allegedly fled at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle reportedly continued to be driven in a highly reckless manner, posing a danger to pedestrians and other vehicles in the downtown district. Due to the escalating risk, Officer Smith made the decision to discontinue the pursuit.
A short time later, the Chrysler sedan was found parked and unoccupied on a downtown business’s private property. The driver was nowhere to be found.
Following an investigation, police identified the alleged driver and owner of the vehicle as 23-year-old Darien Thomas-Kauffman. Thomas-Kauffman now faces charges including fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a third-degree felony, reckless driving, and other traffic offenses, including driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked.
Thomas-Kauffman is described as a 22-year-old black male, standing at 6’3″ and weighing approximately 190 lbs, with black hair. An active warrant for his arrest was issued on February 16, 2024.
Anyone who has seen Thomas-Kauffman or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 717-684-7735 or submit a tip online.
As we continue to follow this developing story, it’s important to remember that these charges are allegations. Thomas-Kauffman is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Further details may emerge as the investigation continues.
