Aqua Pennsylvania Leads Efforts to Meet EPA’s PFAS Standards

BRYN MAWR, PA — Aqua Pennsylvania has announced its readiness to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new regulations for PFAS in drinking water well ahead of the 2029 compliance deadline, building on nearly a decade of proactive action.

“When our customers turn on their taps, they do so with confidence that their drinking water is safe. We are fully committed to providing reliable, high-quality drinking water to our customers’ homes and businesses and communities we serve,” said Marc A. Lucca, President of Aqua Pennsylvania.

PFAS, a group of man-made chemicals found in various industrial and consumer products, has long been an environmental concern. Aqua Pennsylvania began addressing PFAS contamination in 2016, years before federal and state regulations were in place. The company’s initiatives include establishing a state-of-the-art lab capable of detecting PFAS, adopting one of the industry’s strictest standards of 13 parts per trillion in 2020, and providing accessible test results to customers.

Aqua is also working to upgrade filtration systems in areas with elevated PFAS levels, aiming to meet state standards by 2025 and achieve compliance with EPA regulations well before the 2029 deadline. The company has invested heavily in infrastructure improvements, securing nearly $100 million in low-interest loans and grants through PENNVEST in 2024 to fund critical water treatment projects.

To offset regulatory compliance costs for customers, Aqua Pennsylvania is pursuing legal action against manufacturers and companies responsible for PFAS contamination in local water sources. These measures are supported by its significant investments aimed at ensuring safe and affordable water delivery.

The announcement comes as the nation’s drinking water systems face mounting challenges, with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently assigning a grade of C- to U.S. drinking water infrastructure. This emphasizes the importance of sustained investment to protect public health.

With a track record of significant achievements in water quality and infrastructure upgrades, Aqua Pennsylvania remains committed to enhancing water reliability and safety for its customers. Looking forward, the company pledges to continue its role as a leader in safeguarding public health through innovative solutions and resilient infrastructure.
