CHESTER, PA — The City of Chester is one step closer to increasing public safety and advancing its revitalization efforts, thanks to a $7.7 million funding boost from Amtrak. This investment, stemming from the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant program, will be used to install high-security steel fencing along a section of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) passing through the city.
The project aims to enhance safety by reducing unauthorized access to one of the nation’s busiest rail corridors. Chester is among just six U.S. cities awarded funding for FRA-backed Amtrak improvements, a testament to the city’s focus on building a secure transit infrastructure while revitalizing its image.
“The City of Chester is grateful to Amtrak and the FRA for this grant because it is one more step in making our city even safer and more secure for all traveling to and from here,” said Mayor Stefan Roots. “The funding arrives at a pivotal time, as we are deep at work with reestablishing Chester as a top destination and place to live in the region and country. We can’t get there without the help of our partners like Amtrak.”
This safety initiative aligns with Chester’s broader vision of economic revitalization and public safety reforms. Amid efforts to recover from financial distress, the city has launched multiple projects to beautify neighborhoods, develop affordable housing, and attract businesses. Additionally, Chester has implemented initiatives such as the Safe Summer program, which introduced youth curfews and expanded police patrols to improve community security.
“Strong public and private partnerships are key to Chester’s revitalization. Capital investments such as Amtrak’s make it possible,” added Mayor Roots.
With the NEC running through Chester, this new security fencing is about more than enhanced rail safety; it represents a significant step toward a safer, more prosperous future for the city and its residents.
