NORRISTOWN, PA — American Water has introduced a new initiative, Wills for First Responders, to offer pro bono estate planning services to first responders in its service areas. The program’s first event took place at the Norristown municipal building and aided 30 local first responders.
“At American Water, we strive not only to provide our customers with safe, reliable water and wastewater services but also to support organizations and individuals – like our many dedicated first responders – working to make our communities better places to live, work and play,” said Pennsylvania American Water President Justin Ladner. “We’re grateful for the efforts they make every day to keep us safe, and it is a true honor to have this opportunity to show our appreciation to them through our new Wills for First Responders service.”
Starting in May 2024, legal professionals from American Water and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP began conducting phone interviews to prepare estate documents for participating first responders. The process concluded with an in-person meeting in Norristown, where the documents were reviewed, signed, and notarized.
Officer Bryan Boyer of the Norristown Police Department expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you to everyone involved – it’s a great service you’re providing for first responders. Everyone was very clear and helpful along the process.”
The Wills for First Responders program offers basic estate planning services, including wills, financial power of attorney, and healthcare power of attorney/living will. For more complex estate needs, referrals are provided.
American Water plans to expand this initiative to other communities in the states it serves, aiming to help more first responders secure their futures.
