MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is pushing forward with a $55.1 million infrastructure project aimed at improving and widening U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike). The undertaking spans approximately 1.8 miles from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road in Norristown and the townships of East Norriton and Whitpain.
As part of this initiative, utility construction will continue on Township Line Road. This work will necessitate weekday lane closures from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM starting Monday, January 29, through Friday, April 5. Motorists should brace for potential traffic delays and backups during these hours.
The construction work, executed by Allan Myers, LP, a Worcester, Montgomery County contractor, will focus on the southbound stretch of Township Line Road between Swede Road and U.S. 202 for PECO conduit and cable installation. However, other sections of the highway may also experience disruptions. These include U.S. 202 between Johnson Highway and Swede Road, Germantown Pike between Mill Road and Hannah Avenue, Township Line Road between Butchers Lane and Dekalb Boulevard, and Johnson Highway between Bradbury Drive and Old Arch Road.
This extensive project, fully funded by federal dollars, seeks to enhance travel along this vital corridor. It involves reconstructing and widening U.S. 202 from two lanes to two northbound lanes, one southbound lane, and a center turn lane. Additionally, it includes the installation of five-foot bicycle lanes, the construction of new sidewalks at various locations, bridge and culvert reconstruction, and the creation of two sound walls and retaining walls.
Furthermore, the plan calls for new signals, signage, and pavement markings, drainage improvements, and the integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to optimize traffic flow.
This work is part of a larger, multi-phase program aiming to reconstruct, widen, and enhance a 9.1-mile section of U.S. 202 and selected intersections between Johnson Highway in Norristown and Route 309 in Montgomery Township.
Motorists are advised to account for potential delays when planning their routes during the construction period. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
