PHILADELPHIA, PA — 311Literacy and Little Bookmates are celebrating the ongoing success of their innovative program, The Great Reading Tournament, which aims to encourage children to develop a lifelong love for reading in both English and Spanish. This initiative aligns with 311Literacy’s mission to foster multilingual literacy, promoting academic success and cultural awareness.
The inaugural tournament was a resounding success, with 5,000 children reading 20,000 books for a total of 700,000 minutes. Impressively, over 15% of participants continued reading independently after the event concluded. The upcoming tournament, set to run from November 1st to 23rd, expects to engage more than 20,000 participants from the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Andrea Gonzalez, Superintendent of Aspira Schools Pennsylvania, emphasized the program’s impact: “ASPIRA has been honored to participate in The Great Reading Tournament with 311Literacy and is thrilled to continue this partnership… We believe that by creating enhanced reading opportunities, educators can support holistic development and foster a lifelong appreciation for literature among students.”
The program not only motivates children through competition and rewards but also strengthens their reading abilities in both languages. Schools like Philadelphia’s Aspira Cyber Charter School are already signing up their students to participate.
Ariadna Trapote, CEO of 311Literacy, highlighted the broader benefits of the program: “Through The Great Reading Tournament, we are helping children unlock the power of reading in two languages… giving them the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.”
As part of their commitment to literacy, 311Literacy and Little Bookmates aim to expand their reach, ensuring that children from diverse backgrounds have access to essential reading resources. The tournament represents a key effort in making reading an enjoyable and empowering experience for all children, helping them realize their full potential.
