PENNSYLVANIA — We’ve all been there, sitting down for dinner or trying to enjoy a quiet evening at home when our phone suddenly rings. We answer, only to hear a robotic voice on the other side trying to sell us something or scam us out of our money. These spam calls can be annoying at best and malicious at worst, but have you ever wondered who gets the most of them? In this article, we’ll take a look at the top 5 states for spam calls and where Pennsylvania ranks.
According to data analyzed by Stacker in partnership with Visible, as of 2023, Pennsylvania ranks #31 for spam calls received. The state has had 10 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents, with a total of 1,356 spam calls reported so far this year. Of those calls, 33.2% were live voice, 32.2% were pre-recorded, and 9.2% were text messages.
So which states receive the most spam calls? Coming in at #5 is Nevada, with 18 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents and a total of 563 spam calls reported so far this year. Maine takes the #4 spot, also with 18 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents but with a total of only 255 spam calls reported so far this year.
Moving up to #3, we have Washington DC, with 20 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents and a total of 134 spam calls reported so far this year. Illinois takes the #2 spot, also with 20 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents but with a much higher number of total spam calls reported: 2,512.
Finally, at #1 we have Colorado, with 22 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents and a total of 1,272 spam calls reported so far this year.
While Pennsylvania may not be in the top 5 for spam calls, it’s still important to take steps to protect yourself from these annoying and potentially harmful calls. The FCC recommends registering your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry, not answering calls from unfamiliar numbers, and never giving out personal or financial information over the phone.
No one likes to receive spam calls, but some states seem to be getting more than their fair share. Though Pennsylvania doesn’t rank in the top 5 for spam calls, it’s still important to stay vigilant and protect yourself from these unwanted calls. By taking steps like registering for the National Do Not Call Registry and being cautious with unknown numbers, we can all work towards reducing the number of spam calls we receive.
