US Penitentiary Inmate Sentenced for Assault with Dangerous Weapon

SCRANTON, PA — Jose Esteban Mercado-Colon, a 32-year-old inmate at United States Penitentiary Canaan in Waymart, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 51 months in prison on December 14, 2023. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani for assaulting another inmate with a dangerous weapon.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Mercado-Colon had previously pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. On September 22, 2021, Mercado-Colon attacked another inmate using a six-foot sharpened object concealed in a bedsheet. The assault resulted in the loss of an eye for the victim.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with Assistant United States Attorney James Buchanan leading the prosecution.
