HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) recently announced that the Trails at Jakes Rocks, a popular 35-mile natural surface trail system in Warren County, has been named Pennsylvania’s 2024 Trail of the Year. The announcement was made by DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn, who hailed the trail for its recreational value and economic impact.
Located within the picturesque Allegheny National Forest, this trail network offers a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and cross-country skiing. Its unique stacked-loop design addresses a significant gap in Warren County’s recreational landscape by reducing typical gaps found in point-to-point trail systems.
This honor underscores the trail’s appeal to both residents and tourists. According to a recent economic impact analysis, the Trails at Jakes Rocks attracts over 25,000 users annually, contributing an estimated $9 million to local tourism spending.
Jim Decker, President and CEO of the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry, expressed his delight at the trail’s recognition. He emphasized the trail’s role as a catalyst in showcasing the region’s unique beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities to a wider audience.
The Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee awards the Trail of the Year title to raise public awareness about the state’s land and water trail network, and to build support for trails across the state. With more than 12,000 miles of trails, Pennsylvania has a long-standing tradition of being a leader in trail development.
In line with this tradition, the DCNR has set an ambitious goal to ensure that every Pennsylvanian has a trail within 10 minutes of their home. The agency is also focusing on closing priority trail gaps and making strategic investments in trails across the Commonwealth.
The Trails at Jakes Rocks exemplify the potential of well-designed and well-maintained trail systems to enhance recreational opportunities, boost local economies, and promote healthy lifestyles. As we look ahead to 2024, this recognition sets a high bar for other trails across the state and serves as a reminder of the invaluable role our trails play in connecting communities with the natural world.
For Pennsylvanians, this honor is more than just an accolade for a trail—it’s a recognition of our state’s commitment to outdoor recreation, economic growth, and community wellness. As we lace up our hiking boots, strap on our helmets, or clip into our skis, let’s celebrate the Trails at Jakes Rocks and all they represent in our ongoing journey to make Pennsylvania a great place to live, work, and play.
