KING OF PRUSSIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently celebrated its annual Innovation Awards Ceremony, spotlighting the significant contributions of its employees in enhancing operational efficiencies and safety measures. Among the distinguished honorees were four members from PennDOT’s District 6, encompassing Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.

“The PennDOT workforce is more than 11,000 strong, and these award winners represent some of the most dedicated among us,” remarked PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll during the ceremony. “I’m proud to see so many examples of that dedication and recognize those employees for their creativity in solving problems and working diligently for Pennsylvania travelers.”

The District 6 team, comprising David Adams, Traffic Operations Division Senior Manager; Frank DiJoseph, District Regional Traffic Management Center Manager (Retired); Ashwin Patel, Assistant District Executive for Operations; and Mike Valentin, District Regional Traffic Management Center Manager, received accolades for their pioneering work on the Interstate 76 Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Queue Warning (QW) system. This strategic implementation aims to enhance safety and streamline traffic flow along a critical 14-mile stretch of I-76 between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) interchanges.

The VSL and QW system incorporates 72 Variable Speed Limit signs and nine Changeable Message Signs, utilizing real-time traffic data to inform software algorithms that dynamically adjust speed limits in response to traffic conditions. This proactive approach warns drivers a mile ahead of any congestion or stopped traffic, effectively reducing travel times and significantly decreasing crash occurrences within the corridor.

“I am incredibly proud of this team,” stated District 6 Executive Din Abazi. “PennDOT continues to advance its commitment to provide the best transportation network for the traveling public through investing in technology and innovations such as the Variable Speed Limit and Queue Warning system.”
