HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) has reminded older adults across the state that the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is active and will run through March 31. This critical window allows beneficiaries with an existing Medicare Advantage plan to switch to a different plan or revert back to original Medicare, with coverage changes taking effect the first day of the following month.

Medicare Advantage plans, also referred to as Part C, are private alternatives to original Medicare. These plans bundle comprehensive coverage, including Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), and often Part D (prescription drug coverage). However, these plans can vary significantly in terms of premiums, cost-sharing, and additional benefits such as covered medications or provider networks each year.

Recognizing the complexities of navigating these options, the Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight (PA MEDI) program offers free, impartial guidance to older adults. Operated through 52 local Area Agencies on Aging, PA MEDI provides access to trained counselors who assist beneficiaries in comparing plans, exploring cost-saving opportunities, and selecting options tailored to their individual health and financial needs.

“From year to year, Medicare Advantage plans can change their premiums, cost-sharing arrangements, and their selection of covered drugs and supplemental benefits, as well as provider networks and prior authorization requirements,” said Susan Neff, director of PA MEDI. “Choosing the right Medicare Advantage Plan can be challenging, but PA MEDI is here to help you compare plans, look for cost savings, and even help you enroll in a plan that best fits your needs.”

PA MEDI’s assistance extends beyond plan comparisons. Counselors can help beneficiaries determine whether they qualify for state programs designed to reduce Medicare costs, including PACE, Extra Help, and Medicare Savings Programs. PA MEDI’s commitment to neutrality ensures that counselors do not recommend specific insurance companies or products, safeguarding seniors from conflicts of interest.

Seniors are encouraged to connect with their local Area Agency on Aging to schedule personalized counseling sessions or seek advice via the PA MEDI Helpline at 1-800-783-7067 during business hours. For additional resources, events, or educational presentations, beneficiaries can visit the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s website.

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period represents an important opportunity for older adults to reassess their coverage, maximize their benefits, and make well-informed decisions about their healthcare needs. With the support of PA MEDI, Pennsylvania seniors are well-equipped to navigate this annual process with confidence.
