HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) has announced new measures to combat SNAP benefit fraud, including a planned text message alert to warn recipients of the growing threat of card skimming scams. This nationwide issue involves thieves installing skimming devices on point-of-sale machines to steal EBT card details and fraudulently access funds.

“Skimming is a growing issue nationwide, and we are constantly working to ensure that the benefits DHS administers stay with the Pennsylvanians who need them,” said DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. DHS has reported incidents targeting SNAP beneficiaries, with stolen information often being used to take funds after the next benefit deposit occurs.

The planned text alert, which will come from 1-833-648-1964, aims to arm recipients with the information they need to protect themselves. The message will read:

“Protect your benefits! Watch for scams and skimming devices that could compromise your EBT card and funds. Visit www.dhs.pa.gov/scams for more info.”

Recipients are urged to carefully inspect card readers for skimming attachments before swiping their cards. Additionally, they are encouraged to monitor transactions through Pennsylvania’s secure myCOMPASS PA mobile app, change their PIN regularly, and contact their local County Assistance Office if suspicious activity is observed. DHS has implemented stronger PIN security protocols and is exploring additional security measures, including chip-enabled cards.

Retailers are also being called upon to stay vigilant and remove skimming devices promptly to protect customers. The FBI offers public resources on identifying and preventing skimming devices on its website.

The department emphasizes that official communications will never request sensitive personal information or benefit details, nor include links to unofficial websites. Pennsylvanians can contact 211 or visit www.pa211.org for immediate assistance with food needs or questions regarding their benefits.
