PENNSYLVANIA — Gas prices in Pennsylvania have seen a sudden surge in the last week, taking many residents by surprise. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the latest numbers on gas prices, where we can see the biggest increase, and what it all means for Pennsylvanians. Stacker compiled data from AAA, allowing us to provide you with a comprehensive guide on gas prices in the state. From the most expensive metros to the current record-high gas prices, let’s start by looking at the numbers.
The current gas price in Pennsylvania stands at $3.90. This is an increase of 1.8% or $0.07 from the previous week’s rate. However, there is good news for drivers who were anxious about the price increase. Compared to the same time a year ago, gas prices in Pennsylvania have seen a decrease of $0.54 (-12.2%).
Although Pennsylvania’s current gas prices are still relatively low compared to the record high of $5.07 in June 2022, residents have been hit hard by the recent price hike. The most expensive metros for gas at the moment are Altoona, York, and Erie, averaging $3.96, $3.95, and $3.95 respectively. On the other end of the spectrum are Bloomsburg-Berwick, East Stroudsburg, and Pittsburgh, with an average gas prices of $3.82, $3.85, and $3.85 respectively.
The diesel price in Pennsylvania has also seen a similar increase, at $4.41 per gallon, a surge of 2.1% or $0.09 from the previous week’s rate. However, compared to last year, this is still a decrease of -$1.17 or -20.9% from the 2021 rates. The highest diesel price in PA was recorded in May 2022, at a whopping $6.33 per gallon.
According to the data, Pennsylvanians are also paying more than the national average of $3.83 per gallon. However, experts suggest that the current increase in gas prices is due to a combination of factors including the rising price of crude oil, low gasoline supply, and some refineries just now operations getting back to normal after COVID-19.
