Shaping Tomorrow’s Heroes: Pennsylvania State Police Launches Annual Youth Camp

Pennsylvania State Police

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) recently announced the return of its annual youth camp. In partnership with the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Pennsylvania American Legion, the PSP is now accepting applications for the 2024 Elmer Hafer-American Legion-State Police-National Guard Youth Camp.

The six-day leadership camp, slated for June 9-15, 2024, will be held at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County. The camp is designed for teenagers aged 15 to 17 who harbor aspirations of pursuing careers in law enforcement or the military. It represents an opportunity for these young Pennsylvanians to gain a firsthand glimpse into these fields, build confidence, enhance leadership skills, and forge lasting memories.

“Programs like this allow teens to explore their interests and provide a closer look at what a future with the PSP or the Pennsylvania Army National Guard might look like,” said Major General Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).

At its core, the camp seeks to strengthen the bond between Pennsylvania’s youth and the law enforcement community. This initiative, formerly known as the State Police Youth Week, is no newcomer to the scene. This year marks the 52nd camp since its inception in 1970, a testament to its enduring relevance and impact.

Throughout the week, camp attendees, or cadets, will participate in a range of activities aimed at promoting teamwork, physical fitness, and classroom learning about police and military careers. Highlights include a marksmanship course and visits to the State Police Academy in Hershey and Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard Training Center in Lebanon County.

The camp is staffed by members of the PSP, the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and the American Legion, providing cadets with an unparalleled opportunity to interact with and learn from professionals in their fields of interest. At the end of the week, three outstanding cadets will receive scholarship awards of $1,000 each.

Eligibility for the camp is restricted to Pennsylvania residents aged 15 to 17 who have not previously attended the camp. Applicants should be physically fit, in good health, and boast a commendable academic record. The program is free of charge for participants, courtesy of sponsorship from their local American Legion post. Applications are available on the Legion’s application page.

In addition to the Elmer Hafer-American Legion-State Police-National Guard Youth Camp, the PSP also hosts regional camp cadet programs aimed at Pennsylvanians aged 11-15. These week-long programs offer additional avenues for youth to explore their interest in law enforcement and military careers. To inquire about the availability of a camp cadet near you, contact your local Troop Community Services Officer.

The annual youth camp signifies more than just a week of activities; it represents a commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders and public servants. As Pennsylvania continues to invest in its youth, initiatives like this are crucial in shaping a brighter future for the state and its residents.
