SCI Camp Hill Inmate Dies After Assault in Recreation Yard

CAMP HILL, PA — The State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill reported the death of inmate Spencer Kassel, 35, following an assault by another inmate in the recreation yard on January 29.

Prison staff responded immediately to the incident, delivering life-saving measures until Lower Allen EMS arrived. Advanced life support efforts continued, but Kassel was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.

Kassel was serving a one-to-two-year sentence for Aggravated Assault [18.2702.a3], originating from Centre County. He had been incarcerated at SCI Camp Hill since December 9, 2024.

As required by policy, the Pennsylvania State Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.

The prison confirmed that Kassel’s next of kin has been notified. The investigation remains ongoing.
