SCRANTON PA — Charles Epps, a 27-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Schuylkill, Minersville, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty to possession of contraband in prison. The confession was made before U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani on February 28, 2024. Following the admission, Judge Mariani sentenced Epps to serve an additional six months in prison.
Epps, originally from Washington D.C., admitted to possessing a dangerous prison-made weapon, often referred to as a “shank.” This charge stems from an incident in May 2023, when staff at FCI Schuylkill discovered Epps in possession of the makeshift weapon.
The revelation led to an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case.
At the time of the contraband incident at FCI Schuylkill, Epps was already serving a sentence from Washington D.C. for attempted assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm. That sentence is set to expire in 2025.
In a stern move, Judge Mariani ordered that the sentence for the charge of possession of contraband in prison will run consecutively to the Washington D.C. sentence. This means Epps will have to serve the additional six months after completing his current term, extending his stay behind bars.
