HARRISBURG, PA — Pennie, Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace, has reported a record-breaking enrollment of nearly 435,000 Pennsylvanians for 2024. This figure marks a striking 17% increase compared to the same period last year, smashing the average annual increase of just 1%. Since Pennsylvania took control of its marketplace from healthcare.gov four years ago, enrollment has surged by over 150,000, representing an uplift of 56%.
“We are beyond thrilled to see Pennie’s enrollment numbers skyrocket for 2024,” said Pennie Executive Director Devon Trolley. “Knowing this means so many more Pennsylvanians have chosen to protect their health and their savings this year.”
The record-high figures are testimony to the success of the increased federal premium subsidies provided through the Inflation Reduction Act. These subsidies have made health coverage more accessible for Pennsylvania families than ever before, reducing premiums by an additional 45%. Pennie is currently the only platform offering these financial savings to Pennsylvanians, helping them reduce the cost of coverage and care. The impact of these subsidies is considerable, with nine out of ten enrollees qualifying and saving over $500 a month on average.
“This record-breaking number in enrollment is a tremendous milestone because it means more Pennsylvanians than ever have secured an affordable plan through Pennie,” said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys.
Humphreys emphasized that the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) is committed to ensuring all Pennsylvanians are protected through fair and effective regulation of the marketplace. The PID will continue collaborating with Pennie to reach those still without health insurance and help them find affordable and high-quality coverage through the marketplace.
Part of the recent success can also be attributed to Pennie’s partnership with Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services (DHS). This collaboration ensures individuals who are no longer eligible for Medicaid can smoothly transition to enrollment through Pennie.
Although the annual Pennie Open Enrollment period is closed until November 1, 2024, Pennsylvanians seeking coverage before then will need a qualifying life event to enroll. These events include losing other coverage, moving to Pennsylvania, or having a baby. A qualifying life event triggers a time-limited Special Enrollment Period.
Those still without coverage may qualify to enroll through Path to Pennie this tax season while filing their Pennsylvania tax return.
Pennie encourages current customers to update their accounts throughout the year, especially if their household size or income changes.
For any Pennsylvanian who finds themselves or a household member without health coverage during the year, they should explore their affordable, quality health coverage options through Pennie’s website or by contacting Pennie Customer Service at 1-844-844-8040.
