Slot machines, a long-standing staple of the gaming sector, generated $187,834,351 in January 2025, a 4.64% rise from the same period in 2024, when revenue totaled $179,507,293. The number of operational slot machines decreased slightly to 24,388, down from 24,949 the previous January, suggesting a continued focus on optimizing operations. Tax revenue from slots amounted to $94,828,123.
Retail table games recorded revenue of $73,720,836, up 1.46% from $72,658,060 in January 2024. Tax revenue from table games in January 2025 reached $12,321,288.
Online gaming, or iGaming, reported its highest-ever monthly revenue, generating $210,170,977, a robust 40.52% increase compared to $149,563,721 in January 2024. This segment, which includes virtual casino games, continues to gain popularity among players. Tax revenue from iGaming alone reached $93,899,805, showcasing its growing significance as a revenue driver.
While sports wagering saw a slight increase in handle—$873,149,858, up 1.75% from January 2024—the taxable revenue dropped to $51,500,459, a 26.35% decrease compared to $69,924,036 in the prior year. Nevertheless, tax revenue from sports betting in January 2025 remained substantial, totaling $18,540,165.
Revenue from video gaming terminals (VGTs) amounted to $3,175,197, representing a 4.48% increase from January 2024’s $3,039,145. Tax revenues from VGTs stood at $1,651,103. Notably, Pennsylvania’s 74 qualified truck stops now all operate the maximum permitted five machines, compared to 72 establishments a year prior.
Fantasy contests demonstrated steady growth as well, recording $2,677,232 in revenue, an increase of 8.86% from January 2024’s $2,459,307. These contests generated $401,585 in tax revenue for January 2025.
