MECHANICSBURG, PA —The Department of Corrections Parole and Probation has received bullet and stab protective vests for their K9 officers, courtesy of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. This generous contribution equips K9s Baron, Bia, Glock, Dublin, Salem, Fredy, Razor, Nick, Buddy, Kliff, Max, Ozzy, Canon, Szabi, Lord, Mokey, Alex, Dollar, Cody, Edo, Ezra, Bobi, Barkley, and Sully with vital protective gear.

The vests, which bear the tribute “In memory of Kathy W. Coldewey,” are crucial for the safety of these canine officers who work in potentially dangerous environments. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a non-profit established in 2009, aims to supply bullet and stab protective vests and other support to K9s across the United States. With a record of providing over 5,707 vests nationwide, the organization has significantly contributed to the safety and effectiveness of law enforcement K9s.

Each vest, valued at $1800 and weighing between 4-5 pounds, is custom-fitted and certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). The initiative covers K9s that are at least 20 months old and actively employed, ensuring that even those with expired vests can benefit from this protection. Given the estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s in the country, such donations are vital to safeguarding these essential members of the law enforcement team.

The provision of these vests underscores the importance of public and corporate support in enhancing the operational safety of K9 units. Through tax-deductible donations, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. continues to advance its mission, offering peace of mind to handlers and communities by protecting their canine partners during service.
