BRYN MAWR, PA — With winter temperatures on the decline, Essential Utilities, Inc., through its subsidiary Aqua, is encouraging proactive measures to protect homes from frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can cause costly repairs and water service disruptions, especially when freezing conditions persist over time.
To prepare, Aqua advises homeowners to stock up on supplies like pipe insulation, heat tape, and portable heaters. Locating and clearly marking the master water valve is critical for quickly shutting off water in the event of a pipe burst. Additionally, outdoor faucets and meter pits should be winterized by draining and securing them against freezing temperatures. Eliminating drafts in crawl spaces and basements can also protect exposed pipes.
During freezing weather, pipes and water meters should be insulated, and cabinet doors beneath sinks should be left open to allow warm air circulation. Aqua suggests running a small stream of water from the faucet farthest from the meter if temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
If pipes freeze, thaw them carefully by opening a spigot and applying heat gradually with a hair dryer or heat tape. Open flames should never be used. For severe cases, homeowners are urged to contact a licensed plumber.
These preventative steps can significantly reduce the risks of pipe damage and the expense of repairs. Aqua emphasizes the importance of early preparation to safeguard plumbing systems during harsh winter conditions.
