PITTSBURGH, PA — A resident of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Amy Bortot, a 53-year-old United States Postal Service mail carrier, was convicted for violating federal narcotics laws. The sentence, announced on Thursday, November 16, 2023, is the result of a nine-month Title III wiretap investigation into drug trafficking in and around Jefferson, Clearfield, and Allegheny counties.

United States District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegand imposed the sentence.

According to the information presented in court, Bortot used her position as a mail carrier to facilitate a drug trafficking scheme. She identified multiple addresses on her mail route which she provided to Derek Hillebrand. He then instructed his Oregon-based supplier to send parcels containing methamphetamine and marijuana to those addresses.

Rather than delivering the parcels to the listed mailing addresses, Bortot delivered them directly to Hillebrand or one of his associates. In total, Bortot delivered at least one parcel containing approximately 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and multiple parcels containing approximately 80 kilograms of marijuana to Hillebrand or his associates.

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan D. Lusty prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan praised the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, United States Postal Service – Office of Inspector General, United States Postal Inspection Service, Internal Revenue Services, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Allegheny County Police, and Pennsylvania State Police. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, Clearfield County District Attorney’s Office, and the Clarion Borough Police Department also provided valuable assistance in the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Bortot.
