HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania has introduced significant updates to its Automotive Industry Trade Practices regulations, as announced by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin in August, these changes aim to enhance transparency in vehicle purchasing, addressing a major source of consumer complaints.

The new regulations redefine “advertisement” to encompass online statements, ensuring clarity in digital and traditional marketing. Motor vehicle dealers now face stricter inspection mandates. Each vehicle must undergo inspection within 30 days of entering inventory to check for unsafe conditions. Additionally, vehicles that accumulate 500 miles or more on a dealer’s lot before sale require reinspection.

Dealers must disclose any unsafe conditions such as flood damage or bent frames in writing, even for “As Is” sales. These requirements enhance consumer protection by ensuring buyers are fully informed before purchase. The regulation amendments began taking effect on August 19, 2024, marking a new era of transparency and safety in Pennsylvania’s automotive market.
