HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has been awarded the Leadership Award by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in recognition of 25 years of exemplary forest management. This honor reflects the state’s long-standing commitment to sustainable forestry practices.

A Milestone in Forest Conservation

Governor Josh Shapiro has prioritized environmental protection, ensuring Pennsylvanians’ rights to clean air, pure water, and a preserved environment. This award underscores those efforts.

“The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is excited to celebrate this incredible honor, which highlights 25 years of management certification and the tremendous work of our Bureau of Forestry to be a national leader in forest conservation,” said Cindy Adams Dunn, Secretary of the DCNR. “These efforts ensure we have healthy, vibrant forests for wildlife habitat, sustainable forest products, and more. Congratulations to our Forestry staff for this well-deserved honor.”

Recognized Excellence

The Bureau of Forestry received the award for its consistent success across various forest conditions, multiple agencies, and evolving public expectations. The FSC, a respected national and international certification organization, awards its leadership honors to entities demonstrating uncommon excellence in responsible forest management.

State Forester Seth Cassell expressed his gratitude and pride. “We are truly humbled and honored to receive this award and we intend to continue to be leaders in sustainably managing forestland and working to preserve natural spaces for future generations,” Cassell said. “I believe our team in the Bureau of Forestry is second to none. This award proves that our work and commitment to excellence is truly making a difference. Thank you to the Forest Stewardship Council for recognizing our work.”

Continued Commitment

The Bureau of Forestry was one of 20 recipients of the FSC recognition in 2023. This commendation follows a successful audit announced last year, further validating the agency’s effective and sustainable forest management practices.

The recognition from the FSC highlights Pennsylvania’s leadership in forest conservation. It serves as a testament to the dedication of the DCNR and its Bureau of Forestry in maintaining healthy and sustainable forests for current and future generations.
