HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) is reminding residents to take advantage of new tools designed to help them make informed decisions about health insurance as the open enrollment period for Pennie—the state’s official health insurance marketplace—closes on January 15. Coverage for plans selected during this period will begin on February 1.
With over 435,000 Pennsylvanians already enrolled in quality health plans through Pennie, and nine out of ten customers qualifying for financial assistance, the open enrollment period represents a critical opportunity for individuals and families to secure affordable, comprehensive health coverage.
To assist consumers in navigating the health insurance landscape, PID has released two Transparency in Coverage (TiC) reports, along with the inaugural Pennsylvania Affordable Care Act and Qualified Health Plans (QHP) Summary. These reports provide vital insights into insurance markets and policies, enabling Pennsylvanians to better understand their coverage options and select plans tailored to their health and financial needs.
The TiC reports reveal key data from previous plan years, including claims, claim denials, and appeals. They also shed light on common reasons for denials and provide links to essential resources on compliance with Affordable Care Act (ACA) standards for individual and small group plans. This transparency aims to guide consumers in making more informed choices while ensuring equitable treatment in the market.
The QHP Summary Report, meanwhile, outlines how PID evaluates and enforces laws related to health insurance products and rates. By comparing differences in benefits across carriers and highlighting how insurers meet regulatory requirements, the report equips consumers with the knowledge needed to maximize their benefits and select plans that align with their unique circumstances.
“PID is committed to ensuring Pennsylvanians have all the information necessary to choose the best insurance option for them, and will continue to look for ways to make information more easily accessible,” said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys.
The PID and Pennie emphasize that all plans offered through the marketplace cover essential health services, including hospital care, prescriptions, maternity care, and mental health support. Many customers also qualify for tax credits to lower monthly premiums, as well as additional financial assistance to reduce out-of-pocket costs.
Pennsylvanians exploring coverage options before the January 15 deadline can visit Pennie.com or contact Pennie’s customer service at 844-844-8040 for assistance. Those with questions about insurance, denied claims, or their health plans can also reach PID’s Consumer Services Bureau.
With the tools now available, residents have more resources than ever to ensure they secure the coverage they need while navigating the complexities of health insurance with confidence.
