Pennsylvanians Encouraged to Utilize Free Online Tax Filing System as Tax Season Opens

HARRISBURG, PA — Tax season is officially upon us, and for Pennsylvania residents, the Department of Revenue has some good news. Taxpayers can file their Pennsylvania personal income tax returns online for free using the department’s state-only filing system, myPATH.

The user-friendly system offers a wealth of features designed to make tax filing less of a headache. The deadline for submitting your 2023 personal income tax returns is April 15, 2024.

“myPATH is not only cost-effective but also incredibly convenient,” said Revenue Secretary Pat Browne. “Whether you’re on your computer at home or using your mobile device on the go, myPATH allows you to file your return whenever and wherever suits you best.”

One of the most appealing aspects of myPATH is that it doesn’t require you to create a username or password to access many of its features. This includes filing the Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax Return (PA-40), making payments, responding to department requests for information, and checking the status of a refund.

To file the PA-40, you’ll need your Social Security number and either your tax liability for a previous year or your birth date, Pennsylvania driver’s license or photo ID number, and the license or ID’s expiration date. The system even offers automatic calculators to reduce errors and provides instant confirmation that your return has been successfully filed.

For those who prefer a more personalized experience, creating a username and password in myPATH allows you to update or view detailed account information and notices. You can also manage third-party access to your account, granting a tax professional or another person the ability to file your return and make payments on your behalf.

Spanish-speaking Pennsylvanians haven’t been left out either. myPATH includes an option for Spanish-speaking taxpayers to file the PA-40. The department even offers an informational video in Spanish with step-by-step instructions on how to use myPATH.

All taxpayers who earned more than $33 in total gross taxable income in 2023 must file a Pennsylvania personal income tax return by midnight on April 15, 2024.

For those who need assistance, help is readily available. The department’s Online Customer Service Center is open, and you can also reach out by calling 717-787-8201 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can even visit a Department of Revenue district office for state personal income tax filing assistance.

Curious about your refund status? You can check that online or by calling 1-888-PATAXES. Just provide your Social Security number and the refund amount you’re expecting to get the current status.

So, as tax season kicks off, remember that there’s a free, easy-to-use option right at your fingertips. Take advantage of myPATH and make filing your taxes less taxing this year.
