SCRANTON, PA — Melissa Mangione, a 29-year-old woman from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of heroin and fentanyl trafficking. The indictment was announced on November 14, 2023.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the indictment alleges that Mangione conspired with others to distribute these drugs over a span of more than three years. From approximately February 2018 until October 27, 2021, Mangione and her accomplices allegedly distributed heroin and fentanyl at various locations throughout Monroe County.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with its state and local law enforcement partners in Monroe County, investigated this case. The matter is now being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeffery St John.
If found guilty, Mangione faces severe penalties under federal law. These offenses carry a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. The final sentence will be imposed by the Judge after considering the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region. It highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb the distribution of these lethal substances and bring those responsible to justice. As the case progresses, further details about Mangione’s involvement in the drug trade are expected to emerge.
Information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest is not a declaration of guilt. A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
