HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) have unveiled significant upgrades to 511PA, the state’s free, statewide travel information service. This announcement comes shortly after Governor Josh Shapiro launched a revamped PA.gov aimed at delivering more accessible and user-friendly digital experiences.

“Each year, nearly 100 billion vehicle miles are traveled on Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “The Shapiro Administration continues to improve Commonwealth services so they are easier to find, more accessible, and readily available. The more information we can make available to the traveling public, the better. We’re proud of these enhancements and encourage travelers to check out the improved 511PA and ‘know before they go.'”

Launched in 2009, 511PA is designed to reduce congestion and enhance safety on Pennsylvania’s roadways. The service is free and available 24/7, offering traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to over 1,000 traffic cameras. It can be accessed through a smartphone app, by calling 5-1-1, or via regional X alerts. The “Driving Mode” feature allows motorists to receive alerts hands-free, promoting safer driving.

“We are committed to the safety of the 550,000 customers who choose the PA Turnpike daily and know that unforeseen incidents can happen on any road at any time,” said PA Turnpike Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey. “We are excited that these changes to 511PA will improve the customer experience. This additional tool readily assists drivers before they get on the road with real-time information so they can stay informed with what is happening on the roadways.”

The new enhancements to 511PA aim to deliver a more user-friendly experience. Key updates include:

  • Redesigned Mobile App: The updated app now allows users to limit alerts to specific routes, has a new “My Cameras” feature, and offers options for alternate routes.
  • Revamped Website: The website has been completely redesigned for ease of use. It includes new personalization and customization options to help users access the information that matters most to them.
  • Streamlined Phone System: The phone system now features a more efficient menu to help callers obtain the information they need faster.

Users can also sign up for personalized travel alerts on the website. However, current 511PA personal-alert subscribers will need to create a new account in the updated system and set their preferences to continue receiving alerts. Additionally, the updated 511PA app requires users to update their Apple or Android devices to access the latest version.

Enhanced 511PA: Your Roadmap to Safety and Efficiency

These improvements to 511PA reflect a broader commitment by the state to enhance public safety and convenience. By providing real-time information, the upgraded system helps drivers make informed decisions about their travel plans, reducing the likelihood of delays and accidents.

The importance of these updates extends beyond mere convenience. Real-time travel information can be vital in emergencies, helping drivers avoid hazardous conditions or reroute around accidents. In a state where nearly 100 billion vehicle miles are traveled annually, having reliable and up-to-date information can significantly impact public safety and efficiency.

Moreover, this initiative aligns with the Shapiro administration’s broader goal of leveraging technology to improve public services. By making digital platforms more accessible and user-centered, the state aims to ensure that all Pennsylvanians can benefit from these advancements. The upgraded 511PA is a clear example of how modernizing infrastructure can improve everyday life for residents.
