LEMOYNE, PA — Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity today returned more than $160,000 in unclaimed property to United Way of Pennsylvania. The funds, consisting of 197 individual properties ranging from a mere ten cents to over $54,000, were handed over at a press conference held at United Way’s headquarters in Lemoyne.
“This is more than just returning lost money,” said Treasurer Garrity. “It’s about channeling resources back into our communities to do great things. Nonprofits, local governments, schools – they all may have unclaimed property waiting to be discovered.”
United Way of Pennsylvania President Kristen Rotz and CEO of United Way of the Southern Alleghenies Karen Struble-Myers joined Garrity at the event. They encouraged other nonprofit organizations to search for unclaimed property that could bolster their efforts in serving the community.
The Pennsylvania Treasury team facilitated a smooth process for United Way to reclaim the properties. “They’ve been wonderful partners in honoring donors’ original intent,” said Rotz. “The claim process requires minimal paperwork, and the payment was processed quickly.”
Struble-Myers added that the additional funding would make a significant difference in expanding programs across Blair, Cambria, and Somerset counties.
The properties returned date back as far as 1975, with the most recent from 2019. These include funds from accounts payable checks, cashier’s checks, credit balances, uncashed checks, court deposits, and other forms of unclaimed property.
The top five local United Way organizations receiving unclaimed property are: United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, United Way of the Southern Alleghenies, United Way of the Capital Region, and United Way of Bucks County. In total, 27 local United Ways received a share of the unclaimed property.
Each local United Way will use their share to support community impact investments, improving the health, education, and financial stability of community members in their respective areas.
United Way of Pennsylvania is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to champion United Way as a leader and partner in building financially resilient families and thriving communities throughout Pennsylvania. With this significant windfall, they’re poised to make an even greater impact in the communities they serve.
