PENNSYLVANIA — The holiday season has been made even more special this year at the State Capitol Main Rotunda, thanks to the creativity and dedication of senior citizens from across the Commonwealth. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging recently announced that hundreds of handmade ornaments, crafted by older adults, now adorn the Christmas tree in the main rotunda.

Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich highlighted the holiday spirit evoked by the handmade designs created by older adults, emphasizing the time and love invested. “The Department of Aging is pleased to once again see the tremendous response of ornaments submitted by the senior centers. It can truly put someone into the holiday spirit by seeing the variety of designs handmade by the older adults, knowing the time and love that they invested into creating them,” said Kavulich.

Heartfelt notes and messages accompanied the ornaments, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to this annual holiday tradition. The uniqueness of each senior center’s ornaments was acknowledged, and gratitude was extended to all the older adults involved.

Over 75 Senior Community Centers in 38 counties statewide answered the department’s annual call for ornaments. These centers, spanning from Adams County’s McSherrystown Senior Center to York County’s Windy Hill on the Campus, have contributed unique and festive decorations that capture the spirit of the season and the community ethos of the state.

Among the contributors are centers like the Beechview Senior Center in Allegheny County, the Apollo Senior Center in Armstrong County, and the Central Blair Senior Center in Blair County, to name just a few. Even Fulton County’s Hustontown Senior Center and Monroe County’s Loder Senior Center joined the holiday initiative, showcasing the vast network of seniors participating in the project.

The result is a vibrant display of community spirit and holiday cheer that reflects the diverse talents and creativity of Pennsylvania’s seniors. Each ornament tells a story, offering a glimpse into the lives and passions of the older adults who created them.

Visitors can admire the tree and its unique ornaments up close at the State Capitol Main Rotunda until January 8, 2024. This dazzling display serves as a heartwarming reminder of the important role our senior community plays in enriching our Commonwealth.

This initiative by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging not only adds a personal touch to the state’s holiday celebrations but also highlights the significant contributions and active participation of older adults in their communities. It’s a testament to the creativity, talent, and community spirit of Pennsylvania’s seniors.

As we enjoy the holiday season, let’s take a moment to appreciate our older community members’ efforts and the joy they bring to the Commonwealth. After all, it’s these small gestures that truly embody the spirit of the season.
