HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has officially opened the nomination process for the 2025 Trail of the Year, inviting residents to recognize trails that offer unique opportunities and foster community engagement across the state.
DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn announced the initiative, highlighting the importance of trails in enhancing Pennsylvania’s reputation as a premier destination for outdoor recreation. “If Pennsylvanians know of a trail that provides unique opportunities, encourages and celebrates diverse user groups, or enhances their community they should submit a nomination,” Dunn stated. This annual competition aims to elevate the profile of notable trails and showcase their contributions to local communities and the state’s extensive trail network.
Pennsylvania boasts over 12,000 miles of trails, each offering distinctive experiences to both motorized and non-motorized users. Those interested in nominating a trail must submit a completed nomination form along with supporting documentation by the deadline of November 1.
The winning trail will receive formal recognition through a DCNR news release, a commemorative poster distributed statewide, a trailhead marker, and a grant dedicated to educational programs focused on safety and environmental stewardship.
The selection process is overseen by the Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee, a 20-member body appointed by the DCNR. This committee represents a broad spectrum of trail users and plays a pivotal role in advising the state on the allocation of trail funding. The committee is tasked with the advancement of a statewide land and water trail network designed to support recreation, transportation, and healthy lifestyles for all Pennsylvanians.
The Trail of the Year designation serves to increase public awareness and appreciation of the state’s trail system, encouraging residents to explore and support these valuable natural resources. Further details on submission procedures and additional information can be accessed on the Pennsylvania Trail of the Year webpage. The announcement of the 2025 Trail of the Year is anticipated in early 2025, marking another chapter in the celebration of Pennsylvania’s rich outdoor heritage.
