SCRANTON, PA — Omar Vargas, a 32-year-old resident of Drums, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to two years in prison for trafficking methamphetamine. The announcement was made Tuesday by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani handed down the sentence following Vargas’s guilty plea on August 21, 2023, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The conviction is rooted in an incident that took place on January 4, 2021.

On that day, law enforcement officers initiated a traffic stop involving a car in which Vargas was a passenger. Upon stopping, Vargas fled the scene and sought refuge in a nearby residence, where he was later found hiding in the attic and subsequently arrested.

Officers discovered a bag containing about 56 grams of methamphetamine near the front tire of one of the vehicles Vargas had run past during his attempted escape. The presence of the drugs led to the charges against Vargas.

The case against Vargas was jointly investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Scranton and the Hazleton, Pennsylvania Police Department. United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam led the prosecution, with Assistant United States Attorney Todd K. Hinkley assisting in the case.
