HARRISBURG, PA — As the November 5 general election approaches, Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt has unveiled a comprehensive voter education initiative under the Shapiro Administration. This proactive approach underscores a commitment to ensuring that all Pennsylvanians are informed about the voting process and can participate confidently.

Secretary Schmidt emphasized the significance of early and clear communication in fostering voter engagement and trust. “As part of Governor Shapiro’s commitment to strengthening our democracy and ensuring safe and secure elections, we are launching our voter education initiative to make sure that Pennsylvanians know about key dates and deadlines for the Nov. 5 election,” he stated. The initiative aims to equip voters with essential information through accessible and nonpartisan resources.

Key dates for voters include;

  • October 21 as the last day to register for the general election, and
  • October 29 as the deadline to apply for a mail ballot.
  • On Election Day, November 5, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.,
    • Mail ballots needing to be received by county election offices by 8 p.m. that evening.

In an effort to enhance voter education, the Department has developed a toolkit featuring graphics with critical election facts in English, Spanish, and Chinese. These resources are designed to support stakeholders and the public in spreading accurate election information, thereby promoting public confidence.

Significant improvements have also been made to mail ballot materials, following changes announced last fall. The updated materials introduce uniformity across Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, aiming to minimize errors and voter confusion. Schmidt noted, “The Shapiro Administration’s redesigned mail ballot instructions and materials have made voting by mail clearer and easier to understand for Pennsylvania voters.” The effectiveness of these changes was evident during the April primary, where there was a notable reduction in rejected mail ballots due to improper completion.
