HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts have announced the creation of the Older Artists of PA Showcase, a new initiative designed to celebrate and highlight the creative talents of Pennsylvanians aged 60 and older. For its debut, the showcase will be displayed in the State Capitol’s East Wing Rotunda throughout May, coinciding with the national observance of Older Americans Month.

“Older Pennsylvanians have made countless contributions to their communities and the Commonwealth through the arts,” said Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich. “This showcase will celebrate their creative talents and raise awareness of their significant daily contributions.”

The showcase encourages participation from both professional and non-professional artists across the state. Entrants may submit up to two pieces of artwork by Friday, April 4, with eligibility restricted to works created within the past 18 months. There is no cost to participate. Selected pieces, chosen by regional panels, will represent various areas across Pennsylvania.

Besides displaying their work in the State Capitol, selected artists will have the opportunity to sell their creations during the month-long exhibit, providing both exposure and economic opportunities.

“Artistic expression among older adults fosters creativity, interpersonal connection, and shared experiences,” said Karl Blischke, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. “We are excited to partner on this inaugural showcase and look forward to seeing the incredible work from older Pennsylvanians.”

The Older Artists of PA Showcase builds on a tradition of celebrating the contributions of older adults in the arts, such as the handmade holiday ornaments created annually by senior community center members to decorate the Capitol’s Christmas tree and older artists’ participation in the Art of the State exhibition.

Artists can submit their work through two methods: an online form available at this link or by mailing their submissions directly to Jessie Pierce, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council on Aging, at the following address: PA Department of Aging, 555 Walnut St., 5th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17101.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to highlighting the creative and cultural contributions of older Pennsylvanians while creating opportunities for both recognition and engagement in the arts.
