HARRISBURG, PA — On Wednesday, March 17, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives adopted a resolution to commemorate the day, as “Bayard Rustin Day,” honoring the legacy of the influential Civil Rights leader and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. The resolution, introduced by State Representative Andre D. Carroll, D-Phila., highlights Rustin’s enduring contributions to equality and justice.
Bayard Rustin, born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, played a pivotal role in shaping the Civil Rights Movement. A trusted advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rustin was instrumental in introducing nonviolent resistance as its central strategy. Most notably, he organized the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a demonstration that became a defining moment in the struggle for racial equality. Rustin also co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality and took part in the Journey of Reconciliation, a precursor to the Freedom Rides that challenged segregation laws in interstate travel.
“Our world today is a direct result of Bayard Rustin’s activism, and while his impact is undeniable, his name is too often forgotten in discussions of history,” said Rep. Carroll. “I’m very glad to see that our commonwealth is taking a righteous step to honor and bring awareness to his legacy and invaluable contributions to our nation.”
Beyond his work for racial justice, Rustin, a gay Black man, was an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, a fact that Rep. Carroll emphasized as deeply meaningful. “As a gay, Black man, Bayard Rustin’s advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, in addition to his advocacy for racial justice, has played a huge role in my life,” Carroll stated. “As one of a very few gay, Black members of the Pennsylvania legislature, I hope to continue Mr. Rustin’s legacy of fighting for these groups’ rights, equality and humanity, as they are still under attack today.”
This resolution marks a significant achievement for Rep. Carroll, as it is his first to be adopted by the Pennsylvania House. The recognition of Bayard Rustin’s contributions serves as a reminder of his critical role in American history and as an inspiration for ongoing fights for equality.
