HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania officials this week announced the approval of $1.2 million in new funding for transportation infrastructure improvements in Carlisle, Cumberland County.

The funding, secured through the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Funds (TIIF), is expected to catalyze the expansion of a mixed-use development project that could create approximately 900 new jobs and inject an estimated $101 million annually into the regional economy.

DCED Secretary Rick Siger and PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll jointly made the announcement this week, highlighting the project as a reflection of the Shapiro Administration’s strategy to stimulate economic growth by investing in local community priorities.

The funded project, known as the Carlisle Connectivity Project, includes key roadway improvements to North Hanover Street and Carlisle Springs Road, the construction of a 5-point roundabout at a major intersection, and above-grade railway safety enhancements. These improvements are geared towards creating a safer, more connected Pennsylvania, aligning with PennDOT’s vision and objectives.

But the implications of this funding go beyond mere road upgrades. The improved infrastructure is set to support the construction of new apartments and townhouses, a hotel, retail and entertainment spaces, and recreational facilities. This comprehensive development plan aims to transform a former brownfield site into a vibrant mixed-use district, thereby revitalizing the heart of this historic Commonwealth community.

The importance of infrastructure investment in driving economic growth cannot be overstated. Infrastructure serves as the backbone of any community, connecting people, facilitating commerce, and enhancing quality of life. By investing in transportation infrastructure, the state is not only improving mobility and safety but also laying the groundwork for sustained economic development.

Funding such as this can act as a catalyst, attracting private investment and stimulating job creation. By improving accessibility and connectivity, infrastructure upgrades can make a location more attractive to businesses and residents alike, fostering growth and prosperity.

In this case, the Carlisle Connectivity Project is expected to create around 845 new jobs and generate about $101 million in new annual economic output. This is a significant boost for the local economy and a testament to the transformative power of strategic infrastructure investment.

The project has received widespread support from local officials, including Carlisle Mayor Sean Shultz and Senator Greg Rothman, who lauded the state-borough collaborative approach. This collaboration between different levels of government is critical for ensuring that projects like this move forward, demonstrating how government can work effectively to facilitate growth and development.
