Pennsylvania Expands Funding for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an additional corridor eligible for National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Round 1B funding. The newly added corridor, labeled 70B, covers the stretch from exit 149 (Breezewood) to exit 168 (Warfordsburg), near the Maryland border. Proposals for funding in this corridor must be submitted by August 2, 2024, at 5:00 PM EDT.

The proposal period for the original 14 corridor-groups in Round 1B remains unchanged and will close on July 10, 2024. These corridors were opened for proposals on May 13, 2024.

The Focus of NEVI Funding

The PA NEVI program aims to bolster electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the state. This program includes multiple rounds of funding. Round 1B specifically targets closing the remaining gaps along Pennsylvania’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The goal is to ensure no more than 50 miles between charging stations and that stations are located within one mile of an exit.

Funds will be distributed on a competitive basis to support the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of EV charging stations. These efforts align with both state and federal goals to expand EV charging networks and make electric vehicle travel more accessible.

Reasons Why Expanding EV Infrastructure Matters

This initiative holds significant importance for several reasons:

  1. Environmental Impact: Expanding EV infrastructure supports the transition to cleaner transportation options. This can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, contributing positively to environmental sustainability.
  2. Economic Development: Investment in EV infrastructure can drive economic growth. It creates jobs in construction, engineering, and maintenance. Additionally, it encourages the adoption of EVs, which can stimulate further investments in related technologies and services.
  3. Consumer Confidence: Reliable and widespread EV charging infrastructure addresses one of the main concerns of potential EV buyers—range anxiety. By ensuring drivers have convenient access to charging stations, the state can boost consumer confidence and accelerate the shift to electric vehicles.

Accelerating EV Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future

The expansion of EV charging infrastructure has several broader implications:

  1. Federal Collaboration: The NEVI funding aligns with the goals of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Through this act, Pennsylvania can compete for billions in federal funds, supporting a range of transportation programs and projects.
  2. Community Engagement: PennDOT’s strategic approach includes providing resources and guidance to local municipalities and organizations. This helps communities understand and access federal grant opportunities, fostering local involvement and initiative in infrastructure development.
  3. Sustainable Future: Building out EV infrastructure is a critical step towards a sustainable transportation system. It prepares the state for future advancements in EV technology and supports the broader adoption of renewable energy sources.
Next Steps

Organizations interested in applying for the NEVI Round 1B funding for corridor-group 70B must submit their proposals electronically through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development’s eGrants system by the August 2 deadline.

For more information, applicants can visit the PennDOT website, which provides detailed guidance and resources. The website also includes information on federal grant opportunities available through the IIJA, helping local entities navigate and utilize these funds effectively.

Paving the Way for a Greener Future

PennDOT’s proactive measures to expand EV infrastructure represent a forward-thinking approach to transportation and environmental policy. By addressing infrastructure gaps and encouraging local participation, Pennsylvania is setting the stage for a more sustainable and economically vibrant future. As the state continues to build out its EV charging network, these efforts will likely yield long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and the environment.
